Full integration of smatphones into cars

Nokia announced the launch of the Car Connectivity Consortium, a new industry body gathering car and phone makers working on common industry standards.

The founding fathers include Daimler, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Volkswagen Alpine, Panasonic, LG, Nokia and Samsung.

Nokia says that the Car Connectivity Consortium is an open alliance that will focus on further developing the Terminal Mode standard, address certification and branding, and start looking at opportunities for the automotive environment, including NFC and wireless charging.

The aim of the Terminal Mode specification (developed by Nokia in cooperation with German car makers) is to integrate smartphones into an in-vehicle infotainment system.

Once connected, the full range of smartphone features, services and applications, such as navigation can be made available through screens and audio systems embedded in the car. It also enables information exchange between the smartphone and the car systems.
