Google Drastically Lowers Maps API Fees

Google on Friday last week announced what it comes as a strategic U-turn in the pricing policy of its Map API. The price goes down from US $4 per 1,000 map loads to 50¢ per 1,000 map loads, beyond 25,000 map loads per day.

In addition to that, the pricing for Styled Maps (a feature which allows developer to customize the look and feel of their maps) has been aligned on the normal Google Maps, down from $8 per 1,000 map loads to 50¢ per 1,000 map loads.

Google finally realized that many of the 0,35% of its 800,000 developers (2,800 potential customers) that were over 25,000 map loads per day would never pay such a high price and transition to other services providers.

At a time when Apple is launching its own mapping platform, Google suddenly realized it is not the only game in town (it never was, but being free was a strong attraction point to its platform).

This new pricing will probably stop the developer exodus, however those who have already left to other platforms are unlikely to come back soon. For them this price change is just another sign of the unpredictability of Google, moving prices up and down according to its mood.
